Ketamine Infusion Therapy

Effectively treats depression, pain, and addiction when other treatments fail

Ketamine infusion protocols at Alpine Health & Wellness are tailored to specific patient considerations. However, all patients are fully monitored with pulse oximetry which measures the oxygen in the blood in real time, automated blood pressure cuff, and electrocardiography. Initial ketamine infusion therapy for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and other pain conditions due to centrally-mediated neuropathic pain is generally performed for 4 hours a day for 10 days. Shorter ketamine infusion “booster” protocols may also be quite helpful in optimizing pain relief and quality of life. Protocols for other conditions, including mental health disorders, may vary.

Ketamine Infusion Therapy for Pain

Ketamine infusion therapy has proven effective in improving pain in patients suffering from various nervous system disorders including Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), spinal cord injuries, neuropathy, and other conditions.

CRPS, previously known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), is a chronic pain condition most oftenaffecting one of the limbs (arms, legs, hands, or feet), usually after an injury or trauma to that limb. CRPS is believed to be caused by damage to, or malfunction of, the central and peripheral nervous system. It is characterized by prolonged or excessive pain and mild or drastic changes in skin color, temperature,
and/or swelling in the affected area. In more severe cases, individuals may not recover and may have long-term disability. Anyone can get CRPS. It can strike at any age and affects both men and women, although it is much more common in women. The average age of affected individuals is about age 40. CRPS is rare in the elderly. The key symptom of CRPS is prolonged pain that may be constant and, in some people, extremely uncomfortable or severe. The pain may feel like a burning or “pins and needles” sensation, or as it someone is squeezing the affected limb. There is often increased sensitivity in the affected area, such that even light touch or contact is painful. Other common features include intermittent changes in temperature, skin color, and swelling, changes in skin texture, abnormal sweating pattern, changes in nail and hair growth patterns, joint stiffness, and abnormal movement in the affected limb.

Ketamine Infusion Therapy for Depression

Patients who have been diagnosed with treatment resistant depression are also candidates for ketamine infusion therapy. This includes patient with major depressive disorders, post-partum depression, bipolar disorder, and severe anxiety states. Furthermore, ketamine infusion therapy can successfully treat post-traumatic stress and subsequent depression. When a patient is not responding to in-patient therapy, medication, or other forms of treatment, ketamine infusions should be considered as the next step. Patients with recurrent thoughts of suicide, who need immediate mood stabilization, will most often benefit from ketamine infusion therapy. Ketamine treatments are not for those with mild depression, situational depression, or mood swings.

There is a large body of research that overwhelmingly demonstrates that ketamine infusions work for severe depression resistant to traditional treatments. Studies from prestigious institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, National Institutes of Health, and Yale University show that approximately 70 precent of patients successfully respond to ketamine therapy.

I call Dr. Kesten my "angel" doctor because I met him by accident (literally). I was in an accident and my car insurance gave me his name (1 of 3). The first one didn't work out.
